Benefits of Localized Cryotherapy for Equine:

  • Enhanced recovery time

  • Significant reductions in inflammation and pain

  • Faster and more efficient recovery of many injuries including tendon and ligament injuries, muscle sprains, and joint injuries

  • A higher than normal success rate in treating and rehabilitating conditions such as arthritis and other joint diseases, tendonitis, dermatitis, torticollis, epicondylitis, bursitis and synovitis, cellulitis, sciatica, and many more

  • The enhanced healing process of bruising, scars, wounds, and sutures

  • An increase in the amplitude of movement and mobility for the horse is beneficial post-surgery and for horse rehabilitation

  • Controlled swelling and quick drainage of horse hematomas

  • Beneficial for performance. Treatments relieve tight and strained muscles pre and post-racing, competing, or training

  • Effective for long-term pain management for horses as there are no negative side effects of cryotherapy

  • A higher resilience to future injury and reduced risk of relapse

Treating horses regularly with localized cryotherapy is highly beneficial even if they aren’t injured. Cryotherapy increases blood circulation promoting better mobility and contributing to their overall wellbeing.

The therapy is often used as a part of preventative care to reduce the risk of injury.

Why is Cryotherapy better than icing your horse?

It is well known within the equine sector that cold therapy is beneficial for aiding in the recovery of equine injuries. Applying ice is a common technique used to achieve the benefits of the therapy, most often through the use of ice boots.

Ice boots work by using cold water or ice to reduce the horse’s skin surface temperature down to approximately 8°C within 20 minutes and multiple treatments per day are required.

Research shows to gain the full therapeutic benefits of cold therapy, the speed at which the skin surface temperature is reduced is the most important factor.

Cryotherapy treatments reduce the skin temperature to 39.2°F (4°C) degrees within just 30 seconds. This allows for a stronger thermic shock response than icing, increasing blood flow to the injured area 4x the amount than ice boots do.

In addition, the high pressure of an cryotherapy treatment allows for deeper penetration into the skin triggering deep receptors like the Pacinian corpuscle and ruffini receptors resulting in significant pain and inflammation reduction.

Moreover, due to shorter treatment times and the ergonomic design of the handheld device, cryotherapy provides an easier and more practical method to treat any area of the horse than continually applying ice packs or using ice boots.
